. . . attending words, revising lives

What No One Ever Tells You . . .

Anonymous, age 17 - Skagit County Juvenile Detention

What No One Ever Tells You . . .

What no on ever tells you
is that at home they’re abused,
or that a parent had left
when they were young.
What no one ever tells you
is that night after night
they are haunted by the
demons of things from the past.
What no one ever tells you
is that they can’t carry
on of that your life would
be better without them.
What no one ever tells you
You find out on your own,
but it is too late.

Written after a prompt asking the students what types of things remain unknown about another’s life, and about their own.  The poem under discussion was Stephen Dunn’s “On the Death of a Colleague.”
