Dear America

$6.00

A chapbook of student writing responding to the “Dear America” prompt/lesson plan.

From the Foreword:

Above all the voices gathered here are courageous voices. It takes courage to reveal oneself, to articulate with candor, passion, and honesty one’s feelings … It also takes courage to check and question America’s official story as these writers do. They offer a critique of an America that has not served them well and they do it with sincerity, without relying on cynicism or easy platitudes.

Yet, despite their critique these poems also brim with compassion.

The work of Underground Writing shows that the process of writing is a powerful way to assert the beating of one’s heart … They write of alienation, not out of resignation. Quite the contrary, through their writing these young women and men move beyond their circumstances to provide plenty of inspiration to fuel constructive social action in those of us lucky enough to read their words.
